Carolina Blue, Tar Heel True
My service project is titled “Carolina Blue, Tar Heel True.” Carolina Blue relates to us coming together no matter our race, ethnicity or socio-economic background for the betterment of our community, so that we are all “Carolina Blue.” Tar Heel True relates to us being sure to leave our heel print on not only UNC but on the surrounding Carolina community. My service project essentially teaches middle school students the importance of service by performing a comprehensive service project with them. Students from a privileged Chapel Hill middle school will complete a 4 part service project including a canned food drive, clothing drive, school cleanup and book drive.
❖ The Canned Food Drive will occur over two weeks through Pit sitting, a UNC class competition and door-to-door donations with middle school students.
❖ The Clothing Drive will occur over two weeks and will feature partnerships with campus organizations to provide clothes for families. One week will be for regular clothing while the second week will be targeted towards professional clothing.
❖ The Campus Clean Up will involve Carolina students tidying up a local middle school one Saturday with the students and then have those same students come help clean Carolina with us on a following Saturday.
❖ The Book Drive will occur over two weeks within the UNC community as we collect books for students in the eighth grade preparing for high school.
All of the proceeds will go to a less privileged school in the Chapel Hill community to help the students and their families. The idea is for this to be a recurring project that will exist far beyond my undergraduate career so that I may be able to remain Tar Heel True and enable future students to leave their heel print on the community year after year.
